STORY OF THE FOUR-WAY TEST

story thumbnail
Created in 1932, the Four Way test is one of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics.

What follows is the story written by Herbert J. Taylor then president of a failing business called the Club Aluminum Company. This simple philosophy was adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. Given that members of the Wichita Falls Southwest Rotary Club, the Wichita Falls North Rotary Club and all our High School contestants are preparing for our annual 4Way Test Speech Contest on April 4th at Edgemere Church of Christ, a story on how the Rotary 4 Way Test was developed would be appreciated by our readers. It should be noted that it's author, Herbert J. Taylor served as Rotary International's president during the 1954-55 fiscal year. Thanks to our fellow Rotarians in District 5630 (Nebraska) for sharing this story on their website.

The Rotary Foundation approved International Global Grant Project in Makhanda/Grahamstown, East Cape of South Africa

story thumbnail

Wichita Falls North Rotary club is one of several participating clubs for this project. WFNRC, in partnership with the Grahamstown and Jackson Hole Rotary Clubs in South Africa received Rotary Foundation approval for a $362,500 Matching Global Grant to install new water systems at 6 schools in drought stricken area of South Africa.

The Rotary Clubs are working with these 6 shantytown of Makhanda/Grahamstown, East Cape in South Africa. Because of the drought and unreliable municiple water system, toilets can't be flushed and schools must be shut down until water is available. The intent of the project is to install plumbing systems and tanks to store municiple water and captured rain water to be used when municiple water pressure is unavailable to keep the schools operating. When water systems are not operating, many students in these higher elevation schools do poorly even to the point of dropping out completely.

Wichita Falls Rotary Club members get ready for Dictionary Project

story thumbnail

Our January 21st meeting was busy. In addition to our customary meeting agenda, members prepared dictionary's to be given to 3rd graders at Scotland Park,  West Foundation and Lamar Elementary Schools. We will be working with school administration to distribute these dictionary's safely to those students.

Every year our club gives a dictionary of their very own to every 3rd grade student at Scotland Park ES. The gift dictionary is intended to fulfull a need for those students in 3rd grade. There is a saying that students spend the first 3 years of schooling learning how to read. For the remainder of their education, students are reading to learn. Those 3rd graders can now learn what those unfamiliar words mean on their own.

story thumbnail

On Wednesday Feb. 23rd, members
Tom Sheriff and Mike Crocker
delivered new dictionaries to the
3rd Graders at Scotland Park ES

This annual project provides dictionaries to 3rd graders at our adopted school, Scotland Park Elementary School. The dictionary's are the students to keep. We at Wichita Falls North RC recognize that learning to read is paramount to academic success. Prior to 3rd grade students are learning how to read. In 3rd grade and for the remainder of their academic career, students are reading to learn. A dictionary is a wonderful tool for learning. Even with todays digital tools, teachers tell us that using a dictionary is much more effective in helping the students learn. Some students may come from families that can't afford books at home. Club members are making sure all 3rd graders can enhance their learning opportunities by providing dictionaries.

Wichita Falls North Rotary Club joins Mask-up Wichita County Initiative

story thumbnail

The Rotary Club of Wichita Falls North is partnering with the
other Rotary and Service Clubs in Wichita County in an initiative
to encourage the wearing of masks in advance of reaching
vaccination levels supportive of “Herd Immunity”.

Why are we doing this project?
Citizens are getting tired of following the protective measures: wear a mask, social distance, wash hands frequently and minimize our movement in public to necessary activities. COVID-19 will continue to spread till we reach “Herd Immunity” that comes as 75% of the population has been vaccinated. If we wear a mask we can reduce and prevent exposure to the disease for others and ourselves. Otherwise, “People are going to die that don’t need to die.”

Wichita Falls North RC helps support 364th Squadron Christmas Celebrations

story thumbnail
An update from club treasurer, Ann Lucas.
This years 2020 Covid edition of Squadron Christmas party will be much different than years past.  The check for $750 was given to Anthony Lankin, president of the booster club on November 12 along with over $300 in gift cards, 25 gift baskets and various other gift items that I collected from local merchants.  Each subdivision (E& E, Communications, Hydraulics,  POL, etc) will be having their only small Christmas Party rather than one big party.
Anthony was very thankful for everything we did since they couldn't do any real fundraising this year for the Christmas party.

assists in $161,000 Grant with focus on COVID-19 relief efforts
in North Central Texas, including the greater Wichita Falls area

Rotarians are People of Action and this was on fine display recently when they were asked to support Covid-19 related needs in their community.  Rotarians in District 5790 (North Central TX) put out the call to Club members and friends and raised $65,000 in just ten days.  Contributions came from Rotarians and clubs throughout North Central Texas as well as District 5870 in the Austin area.  Our global partner, District 9810 in Australia, remembered our contribution to their wildfire relief fund and donated to our effort as well!  Our $65,000 raised was matched by the Rotary International Foundation, becoming $161,000 to benefit healthcare and hunger in our communities!
Local hospitals will receive financial support, funds will be used to purchase personal protective equipment, testing kits, thermometers, hazmat suits, and other consumable medical goods.

meetings - at least virtually until it is safe for in-person meetings

PDG Troy gave the club an update about the capabilities of Microsoft Teams. MS Teams is the program that PDG Troy has been using to host the club’s virtual e-meetings. The guest speaker for the meeting was PDG Conrad Heede. PDG Conrad informed us about Rotary Fellowships in general, as well as a somewhat in depth discussion over the Rotary Wine Fellowship. Since the meeting was a virtual e-meeting, no raffle tickets were sold and there was no drawing. Next week, Mayor Stephen Santellana is joining our virtual meeting for an update on our city.

Our Rotary members pitch in by supplying a food pantry
for those students to have food to take home

Our club has a passion for children and making sure they grow up healthy and well educated. Unfortunately, some students are faced with challenges to their nutritional well being. The solution is to work with the school to help fill a pantry with non perishable food that these students can access.

We celebrate city employee vocations with the
Quarterly Employee of the Month
Congratulations Kyle Lange!
Vocation really means “a calling,” a strong desire to spend your life doing a certain kind of work or occupation. Vocations cause us to be driven by a passion that fills your life with fulfillment and satisfaction. And it’s that kind of passion that drives Rotary members to celebrate serving through their vocation. As Rotary members we also enjoy recognizing community members whose passion to serve our community makes our lives better and safer. Kyle exemplifies that passion for service that we all want to emulate.

Saving lives in Ghana

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

Finding Safe Haven

For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen.

India celebrates three years without polio

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."
